FidoNet is Coming!

Fidonet is another step closer to being setup on the BBS. Looks like netmail is almost working. Just a permissions problem to deal with on my Boss’ side. Then it’s a matter of setting up some echomail bases on the BBS. I’ll keep this post updated with info as I can.

Right now, the BBS’ node address is 1:267/518.0. When FidoNet is running, I will be adding a couple more FTNs. I’m also gathering info on using them on the BBS to be posted here and on the BBS for users. As always, answers to questions are just an email away.

Update: I think I got netmail working. Waiting for a reply to test message. Also sent a message to Areafix to see if echos are working.

Update: Looks like Fidonet is working. But some quirks with the CNet tosser is coming up. Have to look into that.

Update: I think I licked the problem I was having with echos tossing into the system. I'll test it for the next few days and we'll see.

Down Time and Updates

Thursday December 11th, at about 7pm EST, the BBS will be down for some updates. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes. Also, starting after the downtime on thursday, the Carrier Whistle Podcast will be available for download on the BBS. The other AmiZed Podcasts, (Amiga Roundtable, NewsTek and Confessions of A Drunk) will follow soon after. For ART (Amiga Roundtable), only the last 10 episodes will be available for download. This will be to help keep the clutter and stray files to a minimum.

Back episodes can still be downloaded on the main podcast page at http://www.amigaz.org

If you have any questions, feel free to send an email!

Update: I never got around to actuall doing the updates because of the weather. I ended up shoveling and getting home late from work to boot. So I’ll probably do these today. So expect the BBS to be up and down.

Update 2: Updates done. Now back to getting FTN running.

The ePostman Rings Twice

With this maintenance downtime, I decided to get email finally working on the BBS. Before, when we were back up in South Dakota, it would only work outbound, but now, it’s 100%. You can send and receive.

But here’s the thing. I hate having to deal with spam, so I plan on setting up a poll this week about email. Do you want it? Or not. Doesn’t matter to me either way. But the AmigaZ.org domain has been around for about 12 years, so it’s on a few spamming lists. As soon as I turned on the mail server to test it, spam got delivered. So it’s up to you. The poll will be posted in the Voting section of the BBS by Friday. Use “V” to access it from the main menu.

Down Time

Just a quick note, the BBS will be up and down tonight for a bit. Doing some maintence. This website may experience some hiccups as well. Sorry for the inconvience. We’ll be back up as soon as possible.

Update: The BBS is now back up. Here’ what we did..

  • Security updates for the computer.
  • Moved the location of the BBS for better access.
  • Updated DNS records.

Thanks for bearing with us during the updates.

The Calendar

Just added a calendar to the site. I’ll be adding events to the calendar as they are scheduled on the BBS. Have something you would like added? Just email it on in, or send feedback on the BBS.

Some Current Events

Just a quick little update as to what is going on, on the BBS.
  • In the Video Palace message base, looking for folks willing to exchange Wii or DS Friend Codes.
  • In Coffee Klutch message base, Debaser is looking for some folks to join him in the Doors section to get things rolling.

Interested in any of these? Then fire up your telnet client and log on! We’ll be looking for you.

History Repeats

Well, after the posts on Amigaworld, Amigans, Amiga.org and AmigaWeb, it seems we have some new users. It seems history is repeating itself. Back when I first started Amiga-Z in the 90’s, I got a few callers from word of mouth. The BBS wasn’t ready in my opinion, but hey, I wasn’t going to complain. And I’m not going to here either. Those new accounts won’t get deleted, and I have no plans to close the BBS till launch.

So feel free to log on, but be aware, you will see some changes from what you see now. Some stuff may get deleted and some will just be put aside for later.
Also, some folks have asked if the messages on the BBS are worth keeping. Well, I don’t know, but I’m happy to give folks to the chance to see and determine if they are. So go ahead and look and let me know.

Launch!

After too long of a downtime, the Amiga-Z BBS is coming back. We officially relaunch on November 27, 2008!

The original Amiga-Z BBS went live in February of 1995 on an Amiga 500 with a Bodega Bay, external CD-ROM and 2 HDDs (40MB & 80MB) and had about 1300 files online by the time the BBS was shutdown in 1997, due to a failure on the DataFlyer500 HD controller. After about 8 years, the BBS was resurrected while I lived in South Dakota. Mostly out of a mix of boredom and nostalgia. Since I didn't have my Amiga 3000 with me in the Mid-West, I opted to use an old P2 233MHz machine with Windows 98 and WinUAE to bring the BBS back. It ran for 2 more years till I moved back to New York. Now, 3 years later, it's coming back, somewhat intact.

I will be erasing just about all the old messages in the message bases, as well and doing some reworking of features, as well as some experimenting . For anyone that enjoys BBSing, I invite you to get a telnet client and be ready to log on when we go live.

The BBS is in beta.. Coming along!

Well, I managed to get everything installed and running on the computer. Been stress testing the BBS for a couple days now. Looking good! I took it down because I had setup in the den with the Windows PC’s monitor. Next step is to just take it to the workshop and throw it on the router down there and hook up my KVM switch to it with the linux box. Then just boot her up and start the BBS.

All the old threads in the message bases as well as the users will be purged. We’re going to start fresh! All the files in the File Libraries are staying put though. But I’ll probably weed through some of them to take out older programs or replace with updated versions.

I also seem to have gotten the hang of RapidWeaver, which is what this site is built with. I had it, and it was just sitting on the harddrive of the Macbook Pro, so I figured I should use it. I kinda like it now that I got the hang of it. And I set it up on the server so I could publish pretty easily now. So we’re batting .500!

Welcome to the New Homepage!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the new Amiga-Z BBS Homepage! It’s a little more snazzy and has been streamlined a little to make it easier to find stuff. It’s been a long time since this page has been updated with both content and look. I’d love to hear from folks on how they like the new look and if there is anything you would like to see on the page.

What you’ll find on here now is a little of the following..
  • Who’s on the BBS
  • History of the BBS
  • Menus from the BBS for reference
  • Content you can find on the BBS

You’ll also get the latest news bout the BBS and a chance for you to contribute as well. We have a lot of ideas for the BBS. So bookmark us or subscribe to the RSS. And thanks for stopping by!
