History Repeats

Well, after the posts on Amigaworld, Amigans, Amiga.org and AmigaWeb, it seems we have some new users. It seems history is repeating itself. Back when I first started Amiga-Z in the 90’s, I got a few callers from word of mouth. The BBS wasn’t ready in my opinion, but hey, I wasn’t going to complain. And I’m not going to here either. Those new accounts won’t get deleted, and I have no plans to close the BBS till launch.

So feel free to log on, but be aware, you will see some changes from what you see now. Some stuff may get deleted and some will just be put aside for later.
Also, some folks have asked if the messages on the BBS are worth keeping. Well, I don’t know, but I’m happy to give folks to the chance to see and determine if they are. So go ahead and look and let me know.

Launch!

After too long of a downtime, the Amiga-Z BBS is coming back. We officially relaunch on November 27, 2008!

The original Amiga-Z BBS went live in February of 1995 on an Amiga 500 with a Bodega Bay, external CD-ROM and 2 HDDs (40MB & 80MB) and had about 1300 files online by the time the BBS was shutdown in 1997, due to a failure on the DataFlyer500 HD controller. After about 8 years, the BBS was resurrected while I lived in South Dakota. Mostly out of a mix of boredom and nostalgia. Since I didn't have my Amiga 3000 with me in the Mid-West, I opted to use an old P2 233MHz machine with Windows 98 and WinUAE to bring the BBS back. It ran for 2 more years till I moved back to New York. Now, 3 years later, it's coming back, somewhat intact.

I will be erasing just about all the old messages in the message bases, as well and doing some reworking of features, as well as some experimenting . For anyone that enjoys BBSing, I invite you to get a telnet client and be ready to log on when we go live.

The BBS is in beta.. Coming along!

Well, I managed to get everything installed and running on the computer. Been stress testing the BBS for a couple days now. Looking good! I took it down because I had setup in the den with the Windows PC’s monitor. Next step is to just take it to the workshop and throw it on the router down there and hook up my KVM switch to it with the linux box. Then just boot her up and start the BBS.

All the old threads in the message bases as well as the users will be purged. We’re going to start fresh! All the files in the File Libraries are staying put though. But I’ll probably weed through some of them to take out older programs or replace with updated versions.

I also seem to have gotten the hang of RapidWeaver, which is what this site is built with. I had it, and it was just sitting on the harddrive of the Macbook Pro, so I figured I should use it. I kinda like it now that I got the hang of it. And I set it up on the server so I could publish pretty easily now. So we’re batting .500!

Welcome to the New Homepage!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the new Amiga-Z BBS Homepage! It’s a little more snazzy and has been streamlined a little to make it easier to find stuff. It’s been a long time since this page has been updated with both content and look. I’d love to hear from folks on how they like the new look and if there is anything you would like to see on the page.

What you’ll find on here now is a little of the following..
  • Who’s on the BBS
  • History of the BBS
  • Menus from the BBS for reference
  • Content you can find on the BBS

You’ll also get the latest news bout the BBS and a chance for you to contribute as well. We have a lot of ideas for the BBS. So bookmark us or subscribe to the RSS. And thanks for stopping by!
